What's the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

No, we don't all wear white and pose with fruit and vegetables (if you know, you know).
'Dietitian' is a protected title, this means that we're the only health professionals regulated and protected by law and registered under a professional body (in the UK this is the HCPC).

The minimum requirement to call yourself a Dietitian is a BSc Hons in Dietetics, or a related science degree with a postgraduate diploma or higher degree in Dietetics. Unfortunately anyone can call themselves a nutritionist regardless of training. If you see a nutritionist, make sure they're registered (in the UK they'll have ANutr after their name), who can provide evidence-based advice and information about food and healthy eating.

I've never seen a dietitian before, what does it involve?

Practically, dietitians interpret the science of nutrition to improve health and treat diseases and conditions by educating and giving practical advice. We advise and help to maintain nutritional status when individuals want to trial dietary interventions such as exclusion diets, nutritional supplementation or dietary interventions in areas such as autism for which evidence is still emerging. Most importantly, we ensure all information is individualised to your needs.
But what does this mean?! Firstly, I don't keep fruit and vegetables around for every consultation! You'll have an initial free 15minute discovery  call, to find out whether seeing a dietitian is right for you and then we'll provide you with a quote. We'll then book you in for a 1 hour consultation, and make a recommendation on how many follow up appointments to have.
